Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What differentiates ISIS from other RFID Solutions Providers
A: ISIS has spent twelve man-years developing the "open architecture" Aspects™ software - we are not tied to proprietary hardware. After considerable testing and evaluation we integrate Aspects™ with the products from some of the worlds leading developers of RFID solutions. This flexibility ensures that ISIS will remain at the forefront of technological development in this field, and will always supply and support the preferred solution for each client's application.
Q: Do the tags affect IT equipment in any way?
A: No. All tags that form part of the Aspects™ system are categorised MPT 1340 License Exempt by the Radio Telecommunications Agency. This means that they are not allowed to emit more power than 10 milli Watts - such low power output does not affect everyday office electronic equipment.
Q: Can the tags be mounted internally?
A: No. Electronic equipment has to pass international CE regulatory approval, i.e. it is not allowed to radiate. This means that the outside surfaces of most electronic equipment have been "screened" - metal plates are often used to prevent radio emissions.

Tags can be reverse-engineered into the product at the sub-assembly stage of the manufacturing process, but the aerial of the tag must be located towards an outside surface and away from the CE screening.

Until manufacturers of IT equipment integrate tags into the sub-assembly and test the application comprehensively, ISIS recommends that tags be attached externally - this is always a good visual deterrent against theft.
Q: Tracking movement with rfid? What happens when tagged assets leave a building?
A: Aspects™ is not a GPS system. Tags are monitored over relatively short distances up to 70 metres within a building - this type of system is a called "local positioning system" or LPS. Aspects™ prevents a tagged asset leaving a building or records its authorised removal, but cannot identify its location once outside the read range of a sensor - 70 metres.

Size of tag and system cost is still a limiting factor for GPS applications in this field.
Q: How many assets can Aspects™ protect?
A: There is no practical limit to the amount of assets that can be registered and protected by the Aspects™ software.

RFID systems hardware is constricted by an upper limit that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. "Collision" and "pick rate" are the two most frequently used terms when assessing the functionality of an RFID system. Collision is when too many tags are present within the read-range and the transmission of one tag collides with that of another. Pick rate refers to the ability of a sensor to recognise tags within a certain timeframe, such as per second.

ISIS only offers an RFID solution best suited to the needs of a client. We consult extensively with our clients before offering our recommendation. The size of the building, the number of employees, the amount, type and distribution of assets, location and size of exit portals, and the organisation's working practises must all be considered. ISIS then tailors the installation of the system architecture ensuring traffic flow at portals, even at the busiest times, is still monitored.
Q: Is it possible to protect assets across multiple sites?
A: Yes. Aspects™ already has the capability to monitor and protect assets within multiple buildings. Data entry is only required once. The Aspects™ software is networkable.
Q: Can Aspects™ integrate with other asset management systems?
A: Yes. Aspects™ has been written using modern programming tools allowing for easy import and export of data.
Q: Who manages the Aspects™ system internally?
A: Aspects™ is an "electronic asset manager", and most processes have been automated once an asset has been tagged. Aspects™ benefits various internal departments and is networkable; the departments only need download the information specific to their needs.

ISIS offers a variety of service support programmes that can entail tagging of assets. IT may prefer to rely on their suppliers or an internal rollout team to tag the asset and capture the data.

Security has limited access to the Aspects™ programme, and really only monitors the flow of assets through a protected area and reacts to security alerts. Once Aspects™ is installed, Audit need only print out what is in and what is out of the building on any given day and make that information available to Property, or Finance for an up-to-date accurate balance sheet.
Q: How long do the tags last?
A: This varies between manufacturers and some tags have replaceable batteries. Generally all tags will last at least three years (deemed to be the lifespan of a typical IT asset).
Q: How are tags attached?
A: Either using a special, acrylic permanent glue or replaceable double-sided adhesives pads.
